Photograph of Sir John Carstairs McNeill. He is looking to the right and is resting his left hand on the wooden table beside him to the right. He is wearing the uniform of a Royal equerry and is holding a bicorne hat in his right hand. There is a painted scene of a grand interior behind. The photograph is surrounded by a watercolour illustration by the military artist Orlando Norie showing a soldier and his horse in a forest. Sir John Carstairs McNeill was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in New Zealand. He later served as an equerry to Queen Victoria.
