Half-length photograph of Sir James Yorke Scarlett. He is sitting at a writing desk facing left with a pen in his right hand. He is wearing military uniform and the Order of the Bath. The photograph is surrounded by two watercolour illustrations of soldiers and their horses by the military artist Orlando Norie. General Scarlett was celebrated for his actions during the Battle of Balaclava and later commanded the British cavalry in the Crimea.
