Photograph of Sergeant Major Lewis. He is standing looking slightly to the left, holding a sword in his left hand. He is wearing Highland military uniform including tartan trousers and a bearskin hat. The 1877 Empress of India medal is on a ribbon around his neck. There is a chair to the right with a patterned curtain draped behind it.
Sergeant Major Lewis served with the Seaforth Highlanders during the Anglo-Egyptian War.
This photograph comes from an album from Queen Victoria’s collection titled 'AFGHANISTAN AND EGYPT PORTRAITS 1879 AND 1882' (RCIN 2501413). The album contains photographs of British soldiers who served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80) and Anglo-Egyptian War (1882).
