They are arranged in a group with four sitting on the ground and the others standing in a row behind. They are wearing military uniform and most are holding a rifle. Lieutenant Corporal Euston, sitting to the far left, is holding a trumpet and Bandsman Durrant, sitting second from the right, is holding a clarinet. There is a building behind with one window and an archway to the far left.
The Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882 repressed the nationalist ‘Urabi Revolt and led to increased British control of Egypt. This photograph was taken in Cairo.
This photograph comes from an album from Queen Victoria’s collection titled 'AFGHANISTAN AND EGYPT PORTRAITS 1879 AND 1882' (RCIN 2501413). The album contains photographs of British soldiers who served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80) and Anglo-Egyptian War (1882).
