All are wearing the ceremonial uniform of the Life Guards including a helmet with a feather plume. Golding is holding a trumpet and Edwards is holding a flag. The other officers are holding Martini-Henry rifles and swords. There is a brick wall and a wooden door behind them.

The Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882 repressed the nationalist ‘Urabi Revolt and led to increased British control of Egypt.
