Photograph of General Sir Archibald Alison. He is standing with his head turned to the left and is holding a bicorne hat with a feather plume in his right hand. His left arm is missing. He is wearing military uniform with a row of medals and the Order of the Bath. There is a book on the wooden table to the left.
General Sir Archibald Alison lost his arm during the Indian Uprising. He went on to serve in the Anglo-Ashanti Wars and the Anglo-Egyptian War.
This photograph comes from an album from Queen Victoria’s collection titled 'AFGHANISTAN AND EGYPT PORTRAITS 1879 AND 1882' (RCIN 2501413). The album contains photographs of British soldiers who served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80) and Anglo-Egyptian War (1882).
