General Sir John Miller Adye served during the Crimea War and Anglo-Egyptian War and later became the Governor of Gibraltar, where he became known as a painter.
This photograph comes from an album from Queen Victoria’s collection titled 'AFGHANISTAN AND EGYPT PORTRAITS 1879 AND 1882' (RCIN 2501413). The album contains photographs of British soldiers who served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80) and Anglo-Egyptian War (1882).
