Lieutenant John Sherston served with the Rifle Brigade and was an aide-de-camp to Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts.
This photograph comes from an album from Queen Victoria’s collection titled 'AFGHANISTAN AND EGYPT PORTRAITS 1879 AND 1882' (RCIN 2501413). The album contains photographs of British soldiers who served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80) and Anglo-Egyptian War (1882).
