-
Photograph of Emir Mohammad Yaqub Khan (1849-1923) and his followers. They are gathered on a striped carpet with striped awning above them. The Emir is seated at the centre of the group, turned slightly to the left. He is wearing a sash and fur hat and is holding a sword in his left hand. The Prime Minister Habibullah Khan is sitting beside him to the right holding a long curved sword. Daoud Shah, the Commander-in-Chief, is sitting to the left of the Emir. Twenty other men are gathered around them, some seated and others standing. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britian and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and significant figures involved in the conflict.
