-
Photograph of Piper's Hill, Jalalabad. A soldier is standing on a rocky mound in the foreground. Behind it there is an area of open land with another rocky mound beyond with a fort stretched across it. There are trees and a number of small buildings to the left and mountains extend into the distance. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britian and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
