Photograph of Piper's Hill, Jalalabad. On a rocky ridge in the foreground there is a mounted soldier facing right. There is shrubland behind him with a rocky hill beyond. Remnants of a fort can be seen on top of the hill. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britian and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
