Kabul River near Dakka 1878-9
-
Photograph of the Kabul River near Dakka. In the foreground to the left there is a shore partly covered by grass and small trees. The river is to the right, interspersed with pebble spits. Mountains surround the river and extend into the distance. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britian and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
