John Burke (1843-1900)
Road built by the Queen's Own Madras Sappers and Miners through Landi Kotal 1878-9
-
Photograph of the road built by the Queen's Own Madras Sappers and Miners through Landi Kotal, the western end of the Khyber Pass. A road is carved into the side of the mountain, curving around the edge of the gorge. A number of soldiers and a horse are standing on the road to the left. There is a group of men holding spades and pickaxes standing on the rocky slope to the right. There are mountains in the distance beyond the gorge. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britian and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and soldiers involved in the conflict.
