John Burke (1843-1900)
Khurd Khyber Pass 1878-9
-
Photograph of the Khurd Khyber Pass. There is a path running through the gorge with a steep rocky mountainside to the left. A man wearing loose robes, a turban and pointed shoes is standing to the left of the path with his right foot resting on a rock and his head raised to look up at the mountain. Other Afghans and British soldiers are gathered in small groups along the path. Beyond the pass there is a plateau with mountains extending into the distance behind. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britian and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
