John Burke (1843-1900)
Dakka Fort and the Kabul River, looking towards Lalpura 1878-9
-
Photograph of Dakka Fort and the Kabul River, looking towards Lalpura. In the foreground on a rocky ledge to the left there is a sentry box surrounded by armed soldiers. The fort, with stone exterior walls, is on the plateau to the right. Two soldiers are standing in the foreground in front of the fort. Beyond the river is the village of Lalpura. Mountains extend into the distance behind. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britian and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
