Photograph of a Kutchi village near Dakka. The Kutchi were a nomadic Peoples group who occupied the area around the Khyber Pass. In the foreground a group of people wearing loose robes and turbans are gathered on a rocky ledge to the left. On the rough ground to the right there is a seated group of women and children. Two men holding guns are standing to the far right facing each other. Behind there are small dwellings dug into the hillside, partially covered with thatching and canvas. A steep mountain rises behind.

The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britian and Russia over control of Afghanistan. In addition to photographing landscapes and key strategic sites he captured prominent Afghan families and groups.
