Photograph of a travelling wagon in the Transvaal Colony (now Province of South Africa). The covered wagon is to the left and has several pairs of cows harnessed to it, forming a line facing right. There is a group of men and horses in front of the wagon. Hills can be seen in the distance.
The Transvaal Colony was created when the British annexed the South African Republic in 1877. The South African Republic had been founded by Dutch-speaking settler farmers known as Boers who travelled in wagons such as these.Provenance
