-
Photograph of the entrance to the Government House in Pretoria. There is a row of uniformed British soldiers holding rifles standing in front of the entrance pillars. There are two large trees and a tent directly behind the pillars and the Government House is to the left with a group standing on the veranda. Two men are standing together in the foreground to the left and there is a man sitting outside the tent to the far right. Pretoria was founded in 1855 as the capital of the South African Republic, an independent Boer-ruled country. The city and surrounding area subsequently changed hands several times between the British and the Boers in the late nineteenth century.
