Machinery used to hoist and wash diamond soil at a mine in Griqualand-West c. 1879
-
Photograph of the machinery used to hoist and wash diamond soil at a mine in Griqualand-West. There is a rough track in the foreground with large wooden machines running alongside it. Thick cables run from the far left through the machinery and down into the pit beyond. There are a number of carts drawn by horses waiting by the machines.
Griqualand-West was a former British colony in southern Africa. The discovery of diamonds in the area led to vast excavation sites and the mass immigration of workers.Provenance
