Photograph of the Kimberley Mine. Within the vast pit there is a series of earth ledges at different heights. There is a tram line extending into the pit from the far edge and a row of machinery on the rim of the pit to the right. Long cables extend from the machinery into the pit. There is a settlement visible beyond.
The Kimberley Mine was a major diamond excavation site in Griqualand-West, a former British colony in southern Africa. A large town was established nearby to accommodate the mass immigration of workers.Provenance
