A diamond digger's camp at Bultfontein c. 1879
-
Photograph of a diamond digger's camp at Bultfontein in Griqualand-West. A family are gathered to the right of a large tree. Two women are sitting at a table laid with a tea set and a man is resting his hands on the shoulders of a small child. There are wooden huts to the left and a caravan to the right. Griqualand-West was a British colony in southern Africa. The discovery of diamonds in the area led to vast excavation sites and the mass immigration of workers.
