Photograph of the Vaal River near where it enters the diamond fields of Griqualand West. There is a grassy bank in the foreground with a horse tied under a group of trees. The river is to the right. The Vaal River is the largest tributary of the Orange River in south-eastern Africa. The discovery of gold, quartz and diamonds in the area led to vast excavation sites and the mass immigration of workers.
