Photograph of Cetshwayo ka Mpande, King of the Zulu, on board HMS Natal. He is sitting on a wooden bench with a lifebuoy marked 'NATAL' behind him to the left. He is wearing a fur loincloth and has a blanket wrapped around his shoulders. He has an isicoco, a band of hair and grass woven onto the heads of married Zulu men.
Cetshwayo ka Mpande was the King of the Zulu Kingdom at the time of the Anglo-Zulu War (1879). HMS Natal transported Cetshwayo to exile in Cape Town following the Zulu defeat.Provenance
