Photograph of a building in Durban. The two storey building has a gabled and thatched roof, dormer windows and a veranda to the right. A woman is sitting reading on the veranda. There is a lawn surrounding it and a path lined with trees to the left. The building, known as Bishopstowe, was the residence of the Bishop of Natal, John William Colenso (1814-83).
Durban was a port in the Colony of Natal, a British colony in south-eastern Africa. This photograph was taken during the Anglo-Zulu War (1879), which ended the independence of the neighbouring Zulu Kingdom and brought it under British control. The building in the photograph was destroyed by fire in 1884.Provenance
