Red leather album containing photographs relating to British activities in southern Africa at the time of the Anglo-Zulu War (1879). Subjects include Zulu people, King Cetshwayo of the Zulu, gold and diamond mining, Pretoria, British officials of the Cape Colony and the Memorial to Napoléon, Prince Imperial of the French. Many of the photographs are accompanied by handwritten explanations. RCINs 2501126-2501310.
In 1879, British ambitions to create an imperial federation in southern Africa resulted in a series of armed conflicts with Cetshwayo, King of the Zulu, whose territory lay between Natal and the Transvaal. Cetshwayo refused to acquiesce to British demands or disband his army, mounting a sustained campaign of fierce resistance. Lieutenant-General Lord Chelmsford led the forces which invaded Zululand in January 1879 and who finally achieved victory at the Battle of Ulundi in July.Provenance
