Photograph from a series showing Crimean battlefields, 1900-01. The photograph shows the Balaklava Memorial on the site of the Charge of the Heavy Brigade. The memorial is an obelisk surrounded by a low stone wall. A man sits on the wall and there is a horse and cart behind him. To the right is the Turkish redoubt and the Italian cemetery can be seen in the distance. The photograph is tinted with pinks and blues. The Charge of the Heavy Brigade took place during the Battle of Balaklava, 25th October 1854. Even decades after the conflict significant sites continued to be of interest to British, French and Russian photographers.
Provenance
Presented to King George V by Charles J Cooke, 1917. Cooke originally commissioned the photographs from a local photographer while British Vice-Consul of Sevastopol with the intention of presenting them to Queen Victoria.
