Photograph from a series showing Crimean battlefields, 1900-01. The photograph shows part of the battlefield of the Tchernaya. There is a village in the foreground and large hills beyond. The photograph is tinted with pinks and blues. The Battle of the Tchernaya was fought in August 1855. Significant sites from the Crimean War continued to be of interest to British, French and Russian photographers even decades after the conflict.
Provenance
Presented to King George V by Charles J Cooke, 1917. Cooke originally commissioned the photographs from a local photographer while British Vice-Consul of Sevastopol with the intention of presenting them to Queen Victoria.
