Photograph of the cemetery on Cathcart's Hill, with the Picquet House, Victoria Redoubt and the Redoubt des Anglais visible in the distance. There are a number of graves, each with a small headstone. A man stands by the largest group of them. Four soldiers in military uniform stand by the low stone wall to the left, two holding telescopes. This is one of a series of eleven photographs which create a panoramic picture of the Plateau of Sevastopol. The Siege of Sevastopol was a major component of the Crimean War, lasting from October 1854 to September 1855. Cathcart's Hill, the main cemetery for British soldiers killed during the war, was used as an observation point as from it commanders could view the progress of the siege.
