Photograph taken on Cathcart's Hill, looking towards the Light Division camp and the town of Inkerman. On the hillside to the left there are a number of tents around a wooden hut. Two men stand to the right, facing each other from a distance. On the plateau behind there is a large military camp. This is one of a series of eleven photographs which create a panoramic picture of the Plateau of Sevastopol. The Siege of Sevastopol was a major component of the Crimean War, lasting from October 1854 to September 1855. Cathcart's Hill, the main cemetery for British soldiers killed during the war, was used as an observation point as from it commanders could view the progress of the siege.
