Photograph of the mortars in front of the Picquet house. At the centre of the battery there are two large mortars set in stone mounts. The mortar to the left is being loaded by a group of soldiers from the Light Division. Behind the mortars is a stone wall topped with sand bags, and there is a pile of cannonballs on the ground between them. There is a shelter built into the ground to the left. During the Siege of Sevastopol the British brought mortars up to the batteries positioned in front of the town, in the hope that it would give them the necessary power to hit buildings directly.
