Landing Place. Railway Store 15 - 15 Mar 1855
-
Photograph of the landing place and railway stores at the harbour in Balaklava. The quayside bends around to the right, with a partly built rail track at the centre. On either side there are piles of wood and ammunition, and men gathered in small groups. To the right are the railway store buildings and to the left the harbour. Several ships are docked in the harbour, some with gangways linking them to the quayside. Huge supplies of ammunition were needed for the Siege of Sevastopol. The British received their supplies through the small port town of Balaklava and then transported them to troops through a purpose built rail system.
