Photograph of a group of Tartar labourers clearing the ground in front of a wooden hut which has 'STORE 14TH REGIMENT' painted on the side. They are using spades and picks and are wearing traditional clothes and fur hats. One Scottish soldier works at the centre of the group, holding a spade and wearing tartan trousers and a cap.
Tartars were inhabitants of the Crimea. During the Crimean War they were charged with espionage and betrayal by the Russian government who believed that they would, as Muslims, assist the Allies. Following the war huge numbers of Tartars left the Crimea. -
