  • Photograph of William Marshall, in a half length portrait. He faces three-quarters to the left and wears a jacket, waistcoat with neck tie.

This is probably a portrait of Dr William Marshall who was appointed as resident Medical attendant to Queen Victoria and her Household in 1871. Marshall practiced as a doctor from 1864 up until his death in 1885 and had treated the Queen's Personal attendant, John Brown before he began practice at Balmoral. It may have been Brown who first brought Marshall to the attention of the Queen. On the 11th September 1871, Dr Marshall treated Queen Victoria who had been suffering since early August with a sting to her elbow. '...Dr Marshall dressed the wound & put on the bandage. It made him a little nervous but he did it very well.' RA VIC/MAIN/QVJ (W) 11th September 1871.
    Provenance

From an album of photographs that may have belonged to Prince Albert Victor or (more likely) Prince George of Wales as many of the photographs are inscribed to them. It has especial reference to their early life as naval cadets, as many of the portraits are of their fellow cadets or naval officers on HMS Britannia or HMS Bacchante.
