Photograph of a tableau originally performed at 21 Cromwell Road and arranged by Edward Dicey (1832-1911) of two actors who perform the roles of Master Abraham Slender and Anne Page in a tableau of Act 3 Scene 4 of Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor. The actors appear in front of a trompe l'oeil painted backdrop depicting a forest scene with an open door on the right. Slender, played by an unidentified performer, is a suitor to Anne, played by Miss Gunnis and stands facing Anne who asks him "What is your will?".
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh acted as Royal patrons to the performances and with Princess Louise, viewed the performances at 21 Cromwell Street, home to the architect, Charles Freake (1814-84). The proceeds raised by the performances were donated to the National Orphan Home and the Victoria Hospital for Sick Children.Provenance
