Photograph of a tableau originally performed at Cromwell Road, Kensington, and arranged by Edward Dicey (1832-1911) of two actors performing the roles of Mistress Alice Ford and Mistress Margaret Page in Act 2 Scene 1 of Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor. The actors appear in front of a trompe l'oeil painted backdrop depicting a forest scene with an open door on the right. Miss Maude Gilbert who plays the role of Mistress Ford shows a love letter from Falstaff to Miss Page, played by Miss Gilbert and they agree that they are identical: "Why this is the very same!"
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh acted as Royal patrons to the performances and with Princess Louise, viewed the performances at 21 Cromwell Street, home to the architect, Charles Freake (1814-84). The proceeds raised by the performances were donated to the National Orphan Home and the Victoria Hospital for Sick Children.Provenance
