Scene from 'Macbeth': "Look, how she rubs her hands" 1874
-
Photograph of a tableau originally performed at 21 Cromwell Road and arranged by Charles Edward Hallé (1846-1914) of the 'sleepwalking scene' of Act 5 Scene 1 of Shakespeare's play Macbeth. In the background a painted trompe l'oeil depicts the interior of a stone castle which includes two large decorated pillars, a barrel vault receding into the distance and a tapestry screen. Mrs Trüninger plays the role of Lady Macbeth who stands on the right of the scene, her head and body covered by a long, white robe. On the left, Alured de Vere Brooke (1841-1926) plays the role of a doctor who is in private discussion with a gentlewoman, probably played by Winifred Agnes Emily Brooke (c. 1849-1946). The doctor makes notes about the strange behaviour of Lady Macbeth and is dressed in a dark coloured velvet gown and cape, embroidered with gilt thread with a dark coloured, fur trimmed hat. He has shoulder length silver hair and a beard and moustache. The gentlewoman is wearing a pale coloured gown and a dark coloured shawl around her head and shoulders.
The tableau depicts a scene in the play in which Lady Macbeth is observed by a doctor and a gentlewoman in the act of continually attempting to cleanse her hands. The doctor comments to the gentlewoman, 'Look, how she rubs her hands'. The play is set mainly in sixteenth-century Scotland and was written between 1599 and 1606. It is a tragedy exploring the physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who are corrupted by power. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh acted as Royal patrons to the performances and with Princess Louise, viewed the performances at 21 Cromwell Street, home to the architect, Charles Freake (1814-84). The proceeds raised by the performances were donated to the National Orphan Home and the Victoria Hospital for Sick Children.Provenance
