  • Photograph of a tableau originally performed at 21 Cromwell Road and arranged by Charles Edward Hallé (1846-1914) of Act 1, Scene 5 of Shakespeare's play Macbeth. In the background a painted trompe l'oeil background depicts the interior of a stone castle comprising a large decorated pillar and heraldic banner on the right, and a barrel vault receding into the distance on the left. Mrs Trüninger plays Lady Macbeth who wears a white headdress that falls over her shoulders, a pale coloured silk gown decorated along the hem, sleeves and neckline with a geometrically patterned embroidered border and fastened around the waist with a jewelled  belt. She is shown in three quarter view, facing left with her head downcast as she reads a large piece of parchment that she holds out in front of her.

In this tableau, Lady Macbeth reads a letter which begins, 'They met me in the day of success'. The play is set mainly in sixteenth-century Scotland and was written between 1599 and 1606. It is a tragedy exploring the physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who are corrupted by power. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh acted as Royal patrons to the performances and with Princess Louise, viewed the performances at 21 Cromwell Street, home to the architect, Charles Freake (1814-84). The proceeds raised by the performances were donated to the National Orphan Home and the Victoria Hospital for Sick Children.
