Photograph of the interior of St George's Chapel in Windsor with the organ gallery in the middle of the picture. Stalls of the Noble Order of the Garter Knights flank the central section with the Knight's banners raised above the stalls. The Gothic carved ceiling of the chapel is visible above the organ.
St George's Chapel was built by Edward III in 1337 and was expanded and improved by King Edward IV, Henry VII and Henry VIII. The chapel is the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter which was established by King Edward III in 1348. The chapel suffered damage during the English Civil War when the treasury was plundered and lead stripped from the roof. The chapel saw improvements made during the 19th century when the Lady Chapel was completed, a Memorial chapel was erected to the memory of Prince Albert and the West steps added.Provenance
Acquired by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1972
