Dunkeld's origins date back to the 9th century when the King of the Picts founded the town during which time a monastery was founded. In 1689, the town was destroyed during the Battle of Dunkeld when the Jacobites were defeated by the Cameronian Regiment following the Battle of Killiecrankie. The town was re-built during the 18th century and its High Street features some of the best preserved buildings from that period.Provenance
