Frederick Dally (1838-1914)
Barkerville before the great fire of September 16th 1868 1868
-
Photograph of a cluster of wooden buildings set against an escarpment that has been felled of trees.
Barkerville's population grew during the Cariboo gold rush, but was destroyed by fire in September 1868. The photographic studio of Louis A Blanc, a contemporary of Frederick Dally, was unfortunately destroyed during the fire. Dally built his own studio in Barkerville during the rebuilding of the town after the fire. Following the formation of New Barkerville on a new site in 1958, Barkerville Historic Town has largely been preserved as it appeared during the 19th century.Provenance
From an album presented to Queen Victoria by the photographer, Frederick Dally on July 6th 1883
