Work book containing 315 photographs of HMY Britannia during the Far East Tour in 1972 with HM Queen Elizabeth II (b. 1926); HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh (1921-2021); HRH Princess Anne (b. 1950); Admiral of the Fleet, Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1900-79); with Rear Admiral Sir Richard Trowbridge (1920-2003), (active 1970-75). The work book photographs begin with entry into Cape Town, South Africa and includes a photograph of Rear Admiral Trowbridge travelling in the back of a car with a Senior Naval Officer; the photographs then show the Royal Yachtsmen playing ‘crazy sports’ on the deck of Britannia, includes prize-giving by FORY and testing the new swimming pool; refuelling at sea with RFA Tidespring on the 28th January 1972; deck tennis final with the Royal Yachtsmen; solids transfer with RFA Blue Rover on the 2nd February; HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh being greeted on the jetty in Sattahip on the 8th February; HRH Princess Anne arriving and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh being greeted by an unidentified gentleman in tropical white military uniform, possibly a Chief Commander; HMY Britannia in Bangkok on the 10th February; a photograph of HMAS Swan in company; Britannia anchored at the jetty; various buildings and temples in Bangkok, including large gold statue of the Buddha and view of elephants in a hut; young girls giving a traditional dance in traditional costume and masks; photographs of FORY and an unnamed gentleman disembarking Britannia; HM The Queen, wearing the Order of the Garter and Royal family Orders of King George V and King George VI, and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh boarding Britannia in evening dress; FORY escorting an unnamed gentleman wearing insignia and medals; there are also other unnamed and unidentified individuals boarding Britannia, who may be the King and Queen of Thailand, boarding for a Royal Banquet and Reception; photographs of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH Princess Anne attending official welcome ceremony in Thailand, seated on the saluting platform; and then photographed boarding back onto Britannia and waving from the veranda deck to people on the jetty; HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh watching ships pass, including HMS Swan who cheer ship; photographs of Britannia anchored at a jetty, possibly Bangkok, and walking on the Royal Brow with the Royal Yachtsmen on the deck saluting; camera crews and journalists at the foot of the brow; HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh standing on the saluting platform under HM The Queen's Royal Standard, accompanied by the President of Bangkok, Benjamin Henry Shears (1907-81), HRH Princess Anne standing at the back with the President’s wife, SG Shears; the Royal Party meeting with other delegates with the President; the Royal Party welcomed back on board Britannia by Rear Admiral Trowbridge, who is then photographed speaking with HRH Princess Anne; guests for the State Banquet boarding onto Britannia including the Prime Minister of Bangkok Lee Kwan Yew (b. 1923), his wife Kwa Geok Choo (1920-2010); The President of Bangkok and his wife being escorted by FORY; a group photograph taken during the State Banquet, taken in the Drawing Room of Britannia; the Royal Marine Band playing on the jetty during the evening with the state guests and Royal Family watching from the Royal Deck; after party group photograph of Royal Yachtsmen with FORY and Lord Mountbatten. The photographs continue in Singapore with images of the city, including Tiger Balm Garden and market streets; Britannia at sea with escort ship, pennant number 50; HMS Cleopatra; a Royal Navy helicopter transferring goods onto the yacht’s deck; the Royal Barge at sea; some photographs of HM The Queen walking on the deck; Lord Mountbatten, FORY and Commander Bird speaking on the deck; views of Britannia approaching the jetty at Brunei on the 29th February after part of their inland visit, and seen greeted by locals and dignitaries; HM The Queen and HRH Princess Anne photographed on a red carpet carrying bouquets; HM The Queen photographed inspecting the Guard of Honour, possibly the Royal Brunei Malay Regiment, accompanied by the Sultan of Brunei, General Haji Sir Hassanal Bolkiah (b. 1946); the Royal Party carried in an 18-foot long carriage, known as the Golden Chariot and used for the coronation of Sultans of Brunei and stepping out of the carriage with the Sultan; HM The Queen meeting with other delegates, followed by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and Lord Mountbatten; a visit to a monument with a statue of Winston Churchill cast in bronze; the Royal Party leaving the event and embarking onto Britannia with members of the Sultans family for a State Banquet before Britannia sails for Kuching on the 2nd March. On board Britannia, photographs show HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Lord Mountbatten and HRH Princess Anne boarding Britannia and then watching HMNZS Waikato cheering ship; the photographs then move forward to show another military inspection of the Guard of Honour by HM The Queen, photographs also show HM The Queen standing on the salute platform and being escorted with HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and Lord Mountbatten; Britannia sailing to Singapore Straits which include photographs of the Royal Party watching fishermen gathering the evenings catch. The photographs continue on the Far East Tour, includes photographs of the cities and buildings, temples and fountains which Britannia visited; guests boarding Britannia for State Banquet and group photographs with HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh; another arrival and greeting on a jetty at an unidentified area; photographs then show the Royal Brow being prepared; other sightseeing places, temples, people, monkeys, and statues in Malacca on the 6th March and Sembilan Islands on the 7th March. The work book then contains photographs of the Ship’s Company Concert on the Forecastle, performed for the Royal Party. Back to the tour, another welcoming ceremony for HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh; HM The Queen meeting sportsmen; having an escorted tour and travelling back to Britannia on the Royal Barge; Lord Mountbatten takes leave from Britannia onto HMS Arethusa; more sports activities on board the Royal Yacht, including prize-giving by FORY; photographs of RFA Blue Rover; HM The Queen, wearing the Order of the Garter, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and FORY walking along the deck of Britannia, and photographs of unnamed guests embarking onto Britannia for certain occasions; jackstay transfers of members of the Household with HMS Arethusa; the Crossing the Line Ceremony taking place on the 23rd March; kite-flying competition and relaxed activities, such as horseracing taking place on the deck of the Yacht; HMS Lowestoft; Britannia approaching and anchoring at a small island, possibly North Cousin Island, photographs of local unnamed family groups and views of the villages and buildings; photographs of the Royal Yachtsmen with a giant tortoise and with local village children. The final photographs include Commander Bird taking leave from Britannia; a ship, cruiser and submarine docked at an unidentified jetty; group photographs of the Royal Yachtsmen crew with FORY and some holding trophies, and a photograph of the yachtsmen with entries of their paintings, including one of Gainsborough’s ‘The Blue Boy’. The work book includes some inscriptions related to the subject of the photographs.
