Photograph of a painting by Queen Victoria's eldest daughter Victoria, Princess Royal of a soldier dying in the arms of a weeping woman (the painting is RCIN 981393). His rifle with a bayonet attached is lying by the side of him. An inscription across the bottom of the picture states 'Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa Princess Royal March' with the year obscrued. The photograph is adhered to a page in an album and a drawing of a wooden frame has been added around the photograph.
The original painting was painted in aid of the Patriotic Fund, which was founded in 1854 for the dependents of soldiers killed during the Crimean War. It was sold for £250.Provenance
From an album belonging to Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge. The album was given to HM Queen Elizabeth II by the Duchess of Beaufort, and placed in the Photograph Collection on June 7th 1976.
