Standing behind the couch is the brother of Franz Joseph I, Maximilian I, Emperor of Mexico (1832-67) and his wife Carlota, Empress of Mexico (1840-1927). Standing next to the Empress of Mexico is Archduke Ludwig Viktor of Austria (1842-1919), brother of Franz Joseph I and Maximilian I. He is wearing a military uniform and faces the viewer with both hands resting on the couch in front of him.
