Photograph of a three quarter length portrait of Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II (b.1926), with her corgi Dookie. Princess Elizabeth is sitting on a wooden bench, bending down to wrap her right arm around Dookie. The Princess is looking at the camera while the dog has its eyes shut in contentment. The photograph was taken in the garden of 145 Piccadilly, London
Dookie and another dog called Jane were the first royal corgis. They were acquired in 1933 at the request of Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, who had enjoyed playing with a Pembroke corgi owned by the children of Viscount Weymouth. When this photograph was published in 1936 it was suggested that Dookie was 'unquestionably the character of the Princesses' delightful canine family' and 'a born sentimentalist'.Provenance
