Photograph of Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II (b.1926), with her mother the Duchess of York, later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (1900-2002), and her two corgis Dookie and Jane. Princess Elizabeth is sitting on a wooden bench, her arms around the corgis sitting on either side of her. The Duchess of York is sitting on the edge of the bench to the right. The photograph was taken in the garden of 145 Piccadilly, London.
Dookie and Jane were the first royal corgis. They were acquired in 1933 at the request of Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, who had enjoyed playing with a Pembroke corgi owned by the children of Viscount Weymouth. Dookie acquired his nickname when he was sent away for training as it was known he was destined for the household of the Duke of York.Provenance
