Photograph showing the official opening of the Victory Exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, at Crystal Palace on Sydenham Hill, with King George V reading a speech and accompanied by members of the royal family including the Duke of Connaught, Queen Mary, Princess Mary and Prince Albert. Behind them are many people standing on an amphitheatre stage, part of an estimated 40,000 people who attended the opening. Sir Alfred Mond (1868-1930) is standing to left of the King. He helped to found the museum in 1917, originally called the National War Museum, to record events still happening in the war and collect artefacts. It later moved to the Imperial Institute in South Kensington before its final home at the former Bethlem Royal Hospital at Southwark. One of nine images on album page (album: RCIN 2303829).
