Master: Page 6 of Queen Mary's Album, volume 19 (15th July 1918 - 22nd June 1921) Item: Queen Mary at Appleton House 18 - 18 Jan 1919
-
An informal photograph of Queen Mary and Princess Victoria, standing outside in walking attire and boots, at Appleton Cottage, near Sandringham House, the English home of Queen Maud, her sister-in-law. Queen Mary captioned and dated the three photographs on this page: 'Appleton. Jan. 18th - Toria - Self - taken by Maud'. [Toria was the nickname for Princess Victoria]. The date is significant because it was the same day that her youngest son Prince John died at Wood Farm, near Sandringham. It is not known if it was taken before or after the Prince died, however it was a curious but sympathetic gesture by Queen Maud to have taken these photographs.
Provenance
From an album of photographs acquired and arranged by Queen Mary, between July 1918 and June 1921
