Photograph of Queen Mary (1867-1953) who stands, facing the viewer, wearing a pale dress. On the right stands her daughter, Princess Mary (1897-1965) who also faces the viewer whilst wearing a nurses uniform, comprising a white cap and apron marked with a red cross, probably the uniform of the Voluntary Aid Detachment. In the background are French windows.
During the First World War, Princess Mary was active in supporting hospitals and charity organisations. She successfully established a Christmas Gift Fund, the aim of which was to distribute gifts to sailors and soldiers on the front lines of the war in an effort to boost morale.Provenance
