A photograph of the visit made by King George V and Queen Mary to Barrow, on 17th May 1917. Here, they are talking to a naval officer, surrounded by people. The royal tour of the North was a morale-boosting exercise organised by the Government, concerned by the growing industrial and social unrest partly caused by food shortages and poor working conditions.
