Description

Photograph of Queen Mary (1867-1953), her back facing the camera, laying the stone of the new capital of Delhi. Queen Mary stands on a platform decorated with foliage. An attendant holds an umbrella over her head. Crowds of people watch the event, their backs facing the camera. During the Delhi Durbar of 1911, King George V (1865-1936) announced that Delhi was the new capital of India. Previously the capital was Calcutta.
